¡Soldadera! A Musical Journey in History
One of our passions is to perform songs in Spanish and to locate their meaning within our community's broader history. For example, in 2007 we were asked to research and perform corridos (Mexican ballads) by and about women for a show to be held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) as part of the Smithsonian Institution's traveling Corridos Exhibit. This initial performance soon turned into a larger multimedia musical that features corridos, images and history about the women who fought in the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1921. ¡Soldadera: A Musical Journey in History! has been performed with mariachi groups and dancers who double as actors at venues such as the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque and for several theaters in Texas, California and New York.
