We, Carol Vigil and Leila Flores Dueñas, are Las Flores del Valle of Albuquerque, NM. We are a women's singing duo or dueto that is passionate about what we sing and the message that each song we interpret conveys to an audience. In sharing our music, we hope to preserve the nuances of the many musical genres that are native to these Borderlands and to our own families' histories. Our harmonies have often been compared to the various women's hermana duetos or sister-duos that were famous among Spanish-speaking communities in the 1930s-1960s. The songs these women sang became well-known tunes that greatly contributed to the shaping of present day Mexico and the US Southwest.
We also perform regularly for local events and national art projects that are focused on issues of social justice and improving education. We have been fortunate to have been invited to perform family music with Dan Zanes, corridos of the Southwest with cowboy singer Don Edwards, and at family gatherings with El Gringo. Often, we can be found performing in Albuquerque's Old Town, leading musical performances for the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC), on KUNM Radio or Gov TV on projects such as supported by the Smithsonian Institution such “Corridos y Canciones de la Mujer.” We have also premiered our own musical “¡Soldadera: A Musical Journey in History” at the NHCC and have toured it in Texas, California and New York. We also appear at art venues such as 516 ARTS, the NHCC’s Women & Creativity Series and the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe . We also regularly perform for public and private schools and educational conferences. We are currently working on a new variety CD to include favorite boleros, rancheras and some original songs.
